Polaroid instant photography came from a child’s impatient question.
In 1943, Edwin Land was vacationing in Santa Fe when his three-year-old daughter asked why she couldn’t see the photo right away. He worked out the chemistry that same afternoon. The invention became so valuable that in 1990 a court ordered Kodak to pay Polaroid $909 million for copying it, then the largest patent judgment in U.S. history.
