Play-Doh began as a wallpaper cleaner.
In the 1930s, Noah McVicker’s compound cleaned coal soot off household wallpaper. A nursery-school teacher, Kay Zufall, saw that children could model it and told her brother-in-law, Joe McVicker. By the time Hasbro bought it, that use was gone. She never earned a cent from it, while more than 3 billion cans have sold since.
