Planters made Mr. Peanut from a schoolboy’s $5 sketch.
In 1916, Planters held a contest to find a mascot. Antonio Gentile, a boy from Suffolk, Virginia, submitted a sketch of a peanut figure with a cane. A company artist added the top hat and monocle. In 2021, Hormel bought the brand for about $3.35 billion.
