Philadelphia Cream Cheese was never made in Philadelphia.
It was created in 1872 by William Lawrence, a dairyman in Chester, New York. His distributor stamped “Philadelphia” on the foil because the city was famous for quality dairy, borrowing a reputation the cheese never earned.
