Pez was originally an anti-smoking product for adults.
In 1927 an Austrian mint took the name PEZ from the German word for peppermint — PfeffErminZ. The first dispensers were designed to resemble cigarette lighters, marketed to grown-ups trying to quit. A stop-smoking mint for adults became a children’s candy dispensed from Batman’s head.
