Peugeot made pepper mills before cars, and its lion first stood for saw blades.
In 1810 the Peugeot brothers turned their mill into a foundry making handsaws, and by 1850 a lion was stamped on every blade, for teeth that resist, a blade that flexes and a fast cut. In 1874, fifteen years before the first Peugeot car, the family made the Z pepper mill, whose mechanism is unchanged 150 years on.
