Patreon exists because a homemade music video earned a million views and pocket change.
In 2013 Jack Conte drained his savings, maxed out two credit cards and spent three months making a video for his song “Pedals,” with robots and a replica of the Millennium Falcon cockpit. Not counting his time, it cost more than $10,000. It passed a million YouTube views in its first year. Its ads paid him $54 in the first month.
