Pampers were invented because an engineer hated changing diapers.
Victor Mills, a P&G engineer, was stuck laundering his grandchild’s cloth diapers in the 1950s, so he pointed P&G’s Exploratory Division at the chore. Early designs flopped — one sweaty plastic-pants version died in a summer heat test. The pad that finally worked became P&G’s first brand to pass $10 billion in annual sales.
