Pac-Man was renamed for America so vandals couldn’t turn its P into an F.
In Japan in 1980 the game was Puck Man, after paku paku, the Japanese sound of a mouth snapping. In America the fear was that vandals would scrape the P on its marquee into an F, so it arrived there late that year as Pac-Man, and more than 100,000 machines sold in its first year.
