When OpenAI announced itself in 2015, the headline was $1 billion, pledged by Musk, Altman, Thiel and others to build safe AI for humanity. But the billion was a ceiling, not cash. Filings later showed only about $133 million ever reached the nonprofit. Musk’s famous $100 million came to under $45 million.
