Nokia began as a wood-pulp mill.
Founded in Finland in 1865, it spent a century moving through rubber, cables, and electronics before becoming the world’s dominant phone maker. Then smartphones came, and Nokia sold its handset business to Microsoft. Just over a year later, Microsoft wrote off $7.6 billion, almost everything it had paid.
