Nobel invented dynamite, then left his fortune to the prizes that bear his name.
In 1888 a French newspaper, mixing Alfred Nobel up with his dead brother, reported his death and called him a man who could hardly pass for a benefactor of humanity. In 1895 he signed the will that left 94 percent of his estate, 31,225,000 Swedish kronor, to found the Nobel Prizes.
