Nissan’s Datsun was renamed after a flood, because “son” also means loss.
The first car, the DAT, was named for the initials of its three backers, and its small successor was the Datson, son of DAT. In March 1932 a flood wrecked the new Tokyo sales office, a month before it opened. Whispers that son also meant loss in Japanese got the name changed to Datsun, for the rising sun.
