Nintendo made playing cards for decades before its first video game.
Founded in Kyoto in 1889 to make handmade hanafuda playing cards, it flailed through the 1960s in search of anything else to sell. Its first real toy hit was a mechanical extending arm, the Ultra Hand, dreamed up by a maintenance engineer named Gunpei Yokoi.
