New York Yankees did not begin in New York, or under that name.
Baseball’s most successful club spent its first two seasons in Baltimore as the Orioles, a franchise gutted when its own manager bolted to a rival. Two Tammany Hall men, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery, paid about $18,000 for its rights and moved the club to Manhattan in 1903. Even the word Yankees began as a headline writer’s shorthand.
