Nestlé began as a pharmacist’s formula for a dying baby.
In 1867 a German pharmacist in Vevey cooked cow’s milk, wheat flour and sugar into a food for babies who couldn’t nurse, and it saved a dying premature infant. He gave it his own name. In his Swabian dialect Nestlé means a small bird’s nest, which is why the logo shows a mother bird feeding her chicks.
