During Prohibition, bootleggers in the American South built souped-up cars to outrun the police with loads of illegal moonshine, then started racing each other for bragging rights. In 1948 a promoter named Bill France gathered the drivers, wrote some rules, and turned outlaw driving into NASCAR.
