Mercedes-Benz exists because the inventor’s wife stole his car.
In August 1888 Bertha Benz rolled the Patent-Motorwagen out at dawn and drove her two sons 106 km along wagon tracks to her mother’s house — the first road trip in history. She refueled at a pharmacy, cleared the fuel line with her hatpin, insulated a wire with her garter, and invented brake lining on the way. Carl Benz learned his invention worked by telegram.
