Maybelline is named after the sister whose lash trick started it.
In 1915 Tom Lyle Williams watched his sister Mabel mix Vaseline with coal dust and burnt-cork ash to darken her lashes. He made a commercial version and named it for her — Maybelline, a word said to fuse Mabel with the Vaseline that inspired it.
