Marriott was a nine-stool root beer stand before it was a hotel empire.
In 1927, when winter killed root-beer sales, Alice Marriott walked to the Mexican Embassy and charmed the chef out of his chili and tamale recipes. The stand became Hot Shoppes, then a restaurant empire. The first Marriott hotel came only in 1957.
