Lyft’s first name came from another continent.
After college, Logan Green took a trip to Zimbabwe and watched locals run crowdsourced carpools — anyone could drive, set a route, and fill empty seats. He came home and built a Facebook tool to do the same for students, naming it “Zimride” in the country’s honor. In 2013 the company renamed itself after the ride app it had launched the year before, Lyft.
