Lowe’s was traded, share for share, against a car dealership and a cattle farm.
L.S. Lowe opened a hardware store in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, in 1921. His son Jim and son-in-law Carl Buchan used the store’s profits to buy a car dealership and a cattle farm. In 1952 Buchan traded his share of both for Jim’s share of their two stores, and kept the Lowe’s name.
