Louis Vuitton’s logo sits on handbags the founder never made.
He was a 13-year-old runaway who walked roughly 470 kilometres to Paris, then made his name packing the French Empress’s gowns into travel trunks. The 1858 breakthrough that built the house was a flat-topped, waterproof wooden box you could stack on a train, not a purse. Even the interlocking LV came after his death, drawn by his son Georges.
