LEGO means “play well” in Danish, and by coincidence “I put together” in Latin.
When the Depression killed the furniture trade, Ole Kirk Christiansen’s Billund workshop turned to wooden ducks and piggy banks. In 1934 he named it LEGO, from the first two letters of each word in leg godt — Danish for “play well.” Latin had spelled the same four letters, meaning “I put together,” for two thousand years.
