Lay’s potato chips were first sold from a car trunk.
Herman Lay started in 1932 as Nashville distributor for an Atlanta chip maker, delivering bags from his car across the South. When that maker, Barrett Food Products, faltered, Lay bought its plants in 1938. In 1961 his company merged with the Frito Company to make Frito-Lay.
