Kleenex was originally made to remove makeup.
In the 1920s, Kimberly-Clark sold its new tissue as a disposable substitute for face towels, for taking off makeup. Customers kept writing in to say they used it for colds instead. The company ran a test in Peoria, Illinois, and rewrote its ads around the cold.
