Jeep was sketched in 2 days, against a brutal 49-day Army deadline.
In 1940 the Army wanted a working scout car within 49 days of signing a contract. Nearly bankrupt Bantam won it with a design the freelance engineer Karl Probst drew in about two days for a fee of $200. The Army then handed Bantam’s blueprints to Willys and Ford, who built about 640,000 jeeps.
