Intuit staff waited in computer stores to ask strangers if they could come home.
Scott Cook started Quicken in 1983 after watching his wife loathe the household bills. Employees then hung around software shops until a stranger picked up the box, rode home with them, and watched the shrinkwrap come off. Cook’s instruction was to shut up, say nothing, and watch for an hour or two, or three.
