IKEA started in 1943 as a small mail-order business.
Founder Ingvar Kamprad launched it at 17, selling pens and stockings by post before furniture. The company tells of a designer in 1956 taking the legs off a table to fit it in his car, though its own museum finds three flat-pack tables in the 1953 catalogue. By 2015 cheap furniture that buyers put together themselves had made Kamprad the world’s eighth-richest person.
