IBM sold deli slicers for 13 years under a different name.
Financier Charles Ranlett Flint bolted those slicers to grocers’ scales, time clocks and Herman Hollerith’s punched-card tabulators inside the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Co. in 1911. Thomas J. Watson, who thought that name uninspiring, replaced it in February 1924 with one he had not invented. CTR had opened its Toronto plant in 1917 under the name “International Business Machines Co, Ltd.”
