In 1980 gold belonged on leather, and rubber straps on cheap quartz sports watches. Carlo Crocco spent three years developing a natural rubber strap for his gold Hublot, and it smelled of vanilla. To Swiss watchmaking the pairing bordered on heresy. By the mid-1990s the leading brands were putting rubber on their own watches.
