Huawei grew up in rural China, adapting its telephone switches for rats.
In 1992, while foreign makers sold to China’s big cities, Ericsson had three or four people in Heilongjiang province. Huawei had more than 200, living in its counties and towns, and changed its switches for what only the countryside threw at them, unsteady power and rats. Twenty years later it passed Ericsson as the world’s largest maker of telecoms equipment.
