Heinz’s “57 Varieties” was never the real count.
Riding a New York train in 1896, Henry Heinz saw a sign for “21 styles of shoes” and wanted a number of his own. He already sold more than 60 products, so 57 was never a count — just a figure he liked. Five was his lucky number, seven his wife’s. Within a week the 57 was everywhere, and it is still on the bottle.
