H&M sold nothing but women’s clothes when it opened in Sweden in 1947.
Its founder, Erling Persson, called it Hennes, Swedish for “hers.” Two decades later he bought a Stockholm hunting-and-gun shop, Mauritz Widforss, put its stock of men’s sportswear on his racks, and tacked the gun store’s name onto his own. Hennes & Mauritz. The “M” in H&M is a gun shop.
