Guinness World Records was created to win bar arguments.
In 1951 Sir Hugh Beaver of Guinness Breweries couldn’t settle a hunting-party argument over Europe’s fastest game bird. He hired twins Norris and Ross McWhirter to compile a book of superlatives. It was given away free in pubs and became the best-selling copyrighted book series ever.
