Gucci’s founder spent his youth carrying rich strangers’ suitcases.
As a teenage lift-boy at London’s Savoy around 1897, Guccio Gucci watched wealthy guests arrive with beautifully made leather trunks. The taste he formed hauling their bags he carried home to Florence, where in 1921 he opened a shop of his own. The bellhop’s shop now brings in about €6 billion a year.
