Grindr was once ruled a threat to America’s national security.
In 2016 the Chinese gaming company Kunlun Tech bought 60 percent of it for $93 million, and the rest two years later, without a security review. In 2019 a US government panel told Kunlun its ownership was a national security risk. Kunlun agreed to keep away from users’ data, HIV status included, and in 2020 sold Grindr to an American group for $608.5 million.
