Goodyear is named after a man who died broke.
Charles Goodyear invented vulcanized rubber in 1839, then died in 1860 about $200,000 in debt. Almost 40 years later, Frank Seiberling borrowed the dead inventor’s name for a new tire company. Goodyear’s family never owned a share of it or earned a cent from it.
