Fritos started with a $100 recipe from a newspaper ad.
In July 1932, Charles Doolin answered a San Antonio newspaper ad. A man heading home to Mexico was selling his corn-chip recipe, a hand-operated potato ricer, and 19 store accounts — all for $100. Doolin scraped the money together and fried the first batches in his mother’s kitchen. The company he built became the Frito half of Frito-Lay.
