Frisbee is a misspelling of a pie company’s name.
Wham-O bought the rights to a flying plastic disc in 1957 from inventor Walter Morrison. It dropped his name, “Pluto Platter,” and renamed it after the Frisbie Pie Company — whose tins Yale students had reportedly tossed for decades. Wham-O has since sold more than 200 million discs, and the royalty on every one made Morrison a millionaire.
