Figma’s founding money came from a pitch to build traffic-enforcement drones.
Dylan Field filed that pitch as a Thiel Fellowship application half an hour before the deadline on New Year’s Eve, 2011, proposing drones that would catch reckless drivers and record their license plates. It won him $100,000 over two years. Before he and Evan Wallace turned to design, they built a 3-D scene converter, a face-swap app and a meme generator.
