Etsy’s founder wanted a brand name that meant absolutely nothing.
Rob Kalin watched Federico Fellini’s 1963 film “8½” with a pen, scribbling down syllables the Italian actors said on screen. One scrap stuck. He later claimed “Etsy” meant “oh yes” in Italian, but he had misheard the line and invented the translation afterward. The word engineered to mean nothing went public in 2015 worth $1.8 billion.
