Dyson began with an ordinary vacuum that kept clogging.
James Dyson hated how fast the bag clogged and killed suction, so in the late 1970s he borrowed the cyclone from industrial sawmills. The prototype took 5,127 tries over five years. Every big vacuum maker refused it, because the makers lived on selling replacement bags. His own machine, the DC01, reached shelves in 1993, about 15 years after he began.
