Doc Martens were designed for injured feet.
Klaus Märtens, a German army doctor, injured his ankle skiing in 1945. Finding army boots too painful for recovery, he built a boot with a softer, air-cushioned sole from rubber scavenged from abandoned military stock. The recovery project went public in 2021 at £3.7 billion.
