Discord was built for gamers who needed to talk.
Jason Citron designed it in 2015 as voice chat for multiplayer games, to replace unstable tools like TeamSpeak and Ventrilo. Then the gamers stayed even when the game was off. Then servers formed around interests with no game at all. In 2021 Discord turned down a reported $10 to $12 billion offer from Microsoft and stayed independent.
