Dell started as a secret its founder kept from his parents.
Michael Dell enrolled at the University of Texas in 1983 as a pre-med. Instead he sold upgraded PCs from his dorm room and hid the business in its bathroom. When his parents paid a surprise visit, he rushed the parts into a friend’s room. By the end of his freshman year he was taking in roughly $80,000 a month.
