Crocs were designed for boats.
In 2002, three friends turned a foam clog from the Canadian firm Foam Creations into a boat shoe — light, slip-resistant and odor-resistant in its Croslite resin. Nurses and gardeners took to it before the fashionable did. Written off as a fad in the 2008 crash, it was on a Balenciaga runway in Paris by 2017.
