Craigslist would have been called sf-events if its founder had got his way.
In 1995 Craig Newmark, a San Francisco programmer, began emailing friends about local events. By the middle of the year the list reached 240 addresses, too many for an email’s cc line, and the list server it moved to needed a name. He wanted sf-events, but his friends were already calling it Craig’s list.
