Coach exists because a boss watched a ballplayer’s mitt go soft.
Miles Cahn made men’s wallets, and by 1960 he and his wife, Lillian, were fixated on how a baseball glove softens as it is beaten up. He devised a tanning process for cowhide that copied that break-in. Lillian pushed him to sew the soft leather into women’s purses, the start of a brand that now takes in $6.9 billion a year.
