The company is the direct successor of the United Fruit Company, the American banana giant that dominated Central America for decades. When Guatemala’s elected president, Jacobo Arbenz, signed a land reform that threatened its vast holdings, United Fruit lobbied Washington against him, and a CIA-backed coup deposed him in 1954.
